Helsinki, Finland is heading to Berlin, Germany. It’s something we like to call HELSINKI IN BERLIN!
The Helsinki In Berlin festival was established in Spring 2008 as a way to present some of the freshest new talent to the German audience and music business. Around fifty Finnish artists descended upon the city to perform throughout the capitol for a week of well-attended and well publicized shows. When the event returned as part of Popkomm later that year, it became obvious that this relationship between the German audience and Finnish music was here to stay.
Now, as Popkomm rests, Helsinki In Berlin is filling some of the gap with a couple of high quality showcases featuring six of the hottest Finnish artists of the year.
First up is all-female sensual rockers Indica. Already a phenomenon back home with 2 gold selling and 1 platinum selling albums, this is a band described as “A Disney film on acid…a magical, mystical journey through the dark forest of our own imaginations with 5 mysterious nymphs as our guide”. With the latest album being produced by Nightwish’s Tuomas Holopainen and a European tour with Nightwish already behind them, its safe to say that this could well be worth checking out.
Another band that can afford to name-drop is Phoenix Effect. Singer and guitarist with this group is none other than Janne Kärkkäinen, ex-member of Sunrise Avenue. His new project has got off to a cracking start with the first couple of singles from the new album being enthusiastically aired by several Finnish radio stations already. On top of all this, the album was co-produced by Markus “Captain” Kaarlonen of Poets Of The Fall and is released in Scandinavia through the PoTF’s bespoke Insomniac label.
Wrapping up the first night of Helsinki In Berlin is an exciting, fresh new thing called The Souls. These guys sprang out of backwoods Finland like their asses were on fire and started tearing up the place with their “serious brew of ear splitting proto-heavy grooves and Stones-y riffs, delivered with a passion rarely witnessed”. Having already warmed up the stage for the likes of Eagles of Death Metal and Danko Jones it is clear that this power trio is looking forward to melting your ears down at Frannz.
Round Two of the mini-festival sees three more stunning acts going head to head like prize fighters. We have the beautifully epic Murmansk. A band that is both extremely hot and effortlessly cool at the same time. Murmansk’s ability to merge retro-shoegazing atmospherics with riotous post-rock performance forced the UK’s legendary Mojo Magazine to acclaim the band as a new favourite and announcing that the future of Finnish music was in good hands thanks to Murmansk. So that’s cool. And hot.
Rubik is another band that makes performing to large crowds seem like second nature. Having toured North America with the likes of Mogwai, Autechre, Apostle of Hustle and Disco Ensemble, it’s clear that these guys won’t let anyone down on the live front. The new album is described as a “high-wire dance between the intimate and the elephantine, the melodic and the noisy, the gorgeous and the hideous”. Crikey, have to check that out then.
Astrid Swan now comes with her own band called The Drunk Lovers, bringing an abrasive excitement to her new songs. With her clever songwriting and distinctive vocal delivery now enhanced to their fullest, Astrid’s steady but solid progress over her previous two albums is about to take joyful, giant leaps. Everyone should join her in doing that.
The shows take place at Frannz Klub on 16th and 17th September 2009, in co-operation with the Helsinki In Berlin’s long-standing partner, Trinity Concerts.
