In the late 1970s Sarcofagus, guitarist Kimmo Kuusniemi's band, was one of the earliest metal bands in the world. Since then, Kuusniemi has turned his attention to a number of different areas, the latest among them documentary movies. He has just released a film called Promised Land of Heavy Metal dealing with, surprise surprise, Finland's penchant for metal. Kuusniemi's film is the first independent movie to be distributed through the iPhone App Store.

Wimme has hit the World Music Charts Europe with his newest album Mún. It is the highest rated European album on the chart in the April listing.

In February Finnish rockers HIM (Sire Records/ Warner) scaled the US charts. They made all the way to number one on the hard rock album chart. On the alternative album and rock album charts Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice made it to number two. Digitally, it shot up to 15 on the national album chart.

With temperatures diving to -19°C, constant snowfall and prohibitive alcohol prices, this wasn’t the most welcoming of settings for by:Larm 2010, Scandinavia’s premiere music showcase. Nevertheless, this was a small price to pay for a large injection of emerging local talent that took part in this exceptionally well-organised event held in the Norwegian capital.

- Finns and Foreigners Build Tower of Song!

No divine retribution this time, either, since it’s actually not a tower of song reaching for the Heavens, but a nice and mellow country estate of song: Song Castle. Every year 20 songwriters, 8 of them from abroad and 12 Finns, get together on a secluded estate outside Helsinki to meet and learn from each other, publishers and A&R folks, as well as bang out some tunes.
