FINNISH HITS CROSS BORDERS WITH ITC AND MUSIC WEEK

on 2004-08-24

-  Finland’s biggest ever musical invasion of the UK continues at In The City, Manchester with promotion from Music Week

This September, Finland embarks on one of its most prominent musical showcases to date continuing a remarkable year of Finnish music success in the UK with both The Rasmus and HIM hitting top 10 spots in the UK album charts.

In The City, a key event in the British music industry calendar will present Sounds Like Helsinki, a unique and inspiring exploration into the wealth of talent from the Finnish capital. Five fresh and exciting bands have been selected to present their material in an evening of two halves at Bar 38 in the very heart of Manchester on Monday, September 20th.

The Helsinki Action Night will kick off with the endearing and wildly groovin’ Tigerbombs (Johanna Publishing) who release their latest single to coincide with the event. Next up is Boomhauer (Stupido Records) with their garage country punk and last but not least, the riot grrrl energy of Bitch Alert (Poko Rekords/Propaganda) will conclude the first half, following a tremendous 28 show tour of the UK with support from the British music media.

Helsinki Club Night will follow with the laid-back urban dubs and rhythms of Giant Robot (Stupido Records) succeeded by the mesmerising RinneRadio (Rockadillo Records) who will perform a nu-jazz concoction of beats and lush ambience to end the evening in an ethereal dream.

Paulina Ahokas, director of Music Export Finland comments: “It is a great pleasure for Finnish companies and Music Export Finland to work in co-operation with In The City in introducing a whole range of exciting talent to UK professionals. Artists in this showcase have already earned their merits in other territories, and it is timely to present them in the key British music industry event.”

The Manchester Sounds Like Helsinki street and Media campaign will be carried out by RF Productions and Hartwall/Upcider will provide drinks for In The City delegates during the showcase.

Music Week focus on the music of Finland

The UK’s biggest Music industry magazine Music Week will launch a promotional campaign to support the Finnish showcase three weeks prior to the In The City event. A compilation featuring 18 unique tracks from both established and new Finnish talents Finns Ain’t What They Used To Be, Version 1.1 will be pushed through the letter boxes of all the nearly 8000 subscribers on August 30th.

Ajax Scott, the editor-in-chief of Music Week comments: “We at Music Week are delighted that the next in our series of international talent CDs features music from Finland. There’s some really strong music coming out of Finland at the moment. The success of artists as diverse as Rasmus and Darude in the UK reflects how any music can succeed here so long as it’s strong enough. On the evidence of the music on this CD, there is certainly lots more international success to come.”
