Jonathan Poneman is the special guest at this years Musiikki & Media event on October 23 - 25. Jonathan Poneman is the founder and director of Sub Pop Records, an independent record label based in Seattle, Washington. Sub Pop is referred as the founder of grunge music being the original home to world famous grunge bands such as Nirvana, Soundgarden and Mudhoney. This year Sub Pop is celebrating its 20th anniversary with praised bands such as popular Seattle combo Fleet Foxes.
I am so flattered that I was asked to attend the Musiikki & Media this year. I look forward to visiting the event because I want to meet people, listen to music and hang out. The Sub Pop bands who have played in Finland almost uniformally speak reverently about the experience, says Poneman.
Another celebrity guest at this years event is Tommy Ramone, the drummer and only surviving original member of the highly influential punk rock band The Ramones. Appreciation of the band grew after their active years, and they now regularly appear on “all-time greatest” lists, such as Rolling Stones list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. In 2002 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Tommy Ramone has continued working within the music industry as producer but also playing in his own band Uncle Monk.
Tommy Ramone will be accompanied by the discoverer of The Ramones, another trailblazer in the music industry, Mr Seymour Stein, the head of Sire Records and Vice President of Warner Bros Records. Stein is visiting the Musiikki & Media for the second time.
Jonathan Poneman, Tommy Ramone and Seymour Stein are invited to the Musiikki & Media by Music Export Finland. Altogether nearly 70 international professionals are invited to the event with support from Ministry of Employment and the Economy, Ministry of Education and Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
