LATEST FIGURES FOR FINNISH MUSIC EXPORTS SHOW HEALTHY OVERALL GROWTH IN 2002 AND 2003

on 2004-10-22

- Previous years’ steep rise in record sales reflected in sales of services and copyright royalties

The inaugural report released last year has been updated to cover both 2002 and 2003, updating the figures and allowing more accurate analysis. The survey spans the entire earnings logic, from sales of goods and services to all copyright royalties in 2002 and 2003. The combined value of these sectors comprises the aggregate value of exports.

Seen against the 2001 figures the trend is upwards. The total market value of Finnish music exports increased from 15.5 million euros in 2001 to 20.3 million euros in 2003. Growth was particularly spectacular in sales of services, which increased 170 per cent on 2001 and stood at 9.49 million euros for 2003. This increase can be traced back to the positive record sales tally of previous years, which paved the way for a rise in sales of services such as concerts and tours. The average growth in total market value since 1999 has been 31% annually.

Sales of goods were valued at 5.35 million euros in 2003. Sales of goods comprise record sales, CD production, royalties, licensing of records and publishing contracts. Copyright royalties paid to composers, producers, publishers and performers for the public performances of Finnish music abroad increased by a tenth (9.9%) on 2001. All copyright royalties combined totalled 5.2 million euros in 2003.

The significance of the GSA, France and Great Britain as Finnish export markets increasing

Previously a solid majority of sales of the goods and copyrights came from the Nordic countries. Although these are still an important market for Finnish music, other regions such as the UK and Ireland, the GSA and France/Benelux are growing in importance and this trend is likely to continue, say industry insiders. Finnish music is still getting a lot of airplay in the region: 38% of copyright royalties for 2003 came from the Nordic countries.

Industry working together to produce a comprehensive and comparable study

The data was collected by the Finnish National Group of IFPI and the Finnish Music Publishers’ Association. The Finnish Composer’s Copyright Society Teosto, Nordisk Copyright Bureau (NCB) and Copyright Society of Performing Artists and Phonogram Producers in Finland also released data. Media Clever Oy/Ltd collected information from sectors and companies not covered by the organisation data given above.

This report gives industry and interest groups information on areas of development as well as the structure of exports. The study was conducted using the same method as in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, but with the Swedish and Norwegian figures including more approximations than the Finnish figures.

This study contains information solely on music exports and on money flows returning to Finland from these exports. The combined impact on the Finnish economy of the music industry as a whole is much greater.
