In the late 1970s Sarcofagus, guitarist Kimmo Kuusniemi's band, was one of the earliest metal bands in the world. Since then, Kuusniemi has turned his attention to a number of different areas, the latest among them documentary movies. He has just released a film called Promised Land of Heavy Metal dealing with, surprise surprise, Finland's penchant for metal. Kuusniemi's film is the first independent movie to be distributed through the iPhone App Store.
The film presents a great variety of viewpoints, from those who see metal as the new folk music to those who detest its commercialization. The film includes interviews with many musicians who helped make Finnish metal an international phenomenon.
Kimmo Kuusniemi, after his pioneering fight for metal, lived in England for 16 years, so his perspective on all that happened is different from your average Finnish metalhead's.
